Soda Firing the Easy Way!
This 2 day workshop is for intermediate and advanced students. No kiln firing experience needed!
In this workshop we will focus on:
-Cone 10 reduction atmosphere firings in kilns that use propane/natural gas
-Glazing and wadding for soda/salt firings
-Loading kilns
-Detailed firing schedules/kiln logs
-Downdraft and updraft kiln design
-Kiln firing safety
-Masks for dust and respirators for vapor
-Kiln building and firing reference books
AND
-Grilling burgers
-Drinks/hydration
-Staying cool
Participants will need to bring:
-no more than 12 bisque-fired pots made from cone 10 clay. Coffee mugs, cups, bowls and vases are ideal. (No plates, platters or low wide bowls)
-a cool brush
-hand towel
-sketchbook/notebook
Glazes, wax resist, tape, wadding and N95 masks will be provided
Schedule
Saturday October 5th:
10am-12:30 pm glazing/wadding
12:30-1pm lunch
1-3pm kiln loading
3-4pm soda firing presentation and Q&A
Sunday October 6th:
Noon-7pm Kiln firing and soda spraying!
During the firing we will discuss everything that I can think of. If I run out of things to talk about I will do a pottery demonstration :)
Every cone 10 clay from Armadillo Clay looks good in my soda kiln.
Each student will get 16 inches wide by 16 inches deep of shelf space. Please keep your pots under 5 inches in height.
